Sarah Hughes studied Photojournalism and International Relations at Boston University. After pursuing documentary photography and working at the Smithsonian Anthropological Film Archives, Hughes decided to step away from the camera and delve into conceptual projects in sculpture, installation, performance and video while earning a fine arts degree at California College of Arts from 1996-1998. These works most often consisted of kinetic sculptures and interactivity with people within public spaces.
In 1999 Hughes received a residency fellowship which enabled her to develop the portrait series, Safe & Sexy. This point marked her shift of focus from herself as subject to her community. Her portraits place the subjects within their environment while addressing themes of vulnerability, power, comfort and attraction.
In 2001 Hughes received a grant to continue this project in Sweden where the series exhibited extensively during 2002-2003. A commission with The Walrus Magazine in 2006 facilitated the Canada portraits. Rio de Janeiro in 2009, more locations to comeā¦
Hughes currently works as an editorial agent and freelance photographer in NYC.
