About/Bio/CV
Sarah Hughes is a visual artist, photo editor, writer, and producer, working in the fields of contemporary art, documentary, and breaking news. She studied photojournalism and international relations at Boston University along with an immersive study abroad program in Kenya through the School for International Training. Sarah later pursued a fine arts degree in sculpture at California College of the Arts in Oakland and San Francisco, California where focused on conceptual multimedia projects in sculpture, installation, performance and video.

In 1999, Sarah developed “The Persona Project: Safe & Sexy,” a global portrait and interview series on women, identity, and public space. The project examines how social conventions, economic structures, personal history and location shape our visual and psychological landscape. Her work explores themes of vulnerability, power, comfort, and attraction. Sarah has exhibited and taught extensively in Sweden and the United States, and has continued the series in Canada, Brazil, South Africa, Swaziland, and Turkey. She currently leads workshops and consults on projects related to “The Persona Project.”

Sarah is a photo editor at The New York Times. Previously she worked at Paris Match Magazine, Getty Images Reportage, The New Yorker Magazine art reviews, and the National Anthropological Archives at the Smithsonian. Sarah Hughes is based in New York.
